THE CANCER KIDS' FIRST SHOW!

On Jan. 8th, 2000 the Cancer Kids played our first show in Adam's basement in Brooklyn Center, MN. Adam is from Lunar Excursion Module (Eric's other band). It was also my first show ever, so it was a big deal for me. The guys are in other bands and have played lots of shows before, so it wasn't nearly as big of a deal for them.

We decided to dress up for our show. Eric wanted to go for the new-wave look, Dorkus suggested we wear bras on our heads, and I thought we should wear name tags in honor of Mr. T. ("Table the label, wear your own name!") so we came up with some cool costumes. Dorkus and I got plently of weird looks on the bus on the way to the show.

Anyway, we got there and were hanging around. The basement was really small and seemed like a good place to play. A band called UFAG (United Front Against Genitalia) played first. It was their first show too, and they were really funny. I knew them from school, so it was fun seeing them. They were sort of a Gwar rip-off, and I hate to say it but their costumes totally had ours beaten.

Well, we played second, and it was great. Well, I shouldn't say it was great, but we held things together pretty well considering it was our first show. Nothing terribly bad went wrong. I kept on saying to the guys, "what if I break a string, what if my hand cramps" . . . what if this and that but everything was fine. We just got up and had fun and didn't worry about screwing up. We played a total of ten songs. After the 6th song, Dorkus, decked out in his Rock 'N' Roll Lincoln outfit, did an Abraham Lincoln alter call, inviting the members of the audience up to accept Lincoln as their personal president. (Not just on President's Day, but every day of the year!) It was the best! People were scared. We finished our set, ending with our rendition of Vanilla Ice's "Ninja Rap." It's the biggest joke because I just can't "flow" very well at all! So all in all, it was really fun. Maybe the most fun I've had in a while, even though our set was so short.

Dorkus and I wanted to stick around to see the last two bands, Lunar Excursion Module and decembers architects, but a couple of my friends who'd driven all the way to see us wanted to go out, and try as I might, I couldn't talk my way out of going with them. Anyway, we figured we'd just see the other bands some other time. It was just the best time and it was really great that so many of our friends, family members, etc. showed up to support us.
